You need to assume that the reader may be looking at just one of your online article submissions and that she or he won’t have your other articles to refer to.
Why shouldn’t you mention Part 1, Part 2, etc.?
Place yourself in the shoes of the publisher, would you just like part 1 or 2 of a series, without the other parts? Ensuring each of your articles feels complete give it the best chance of republication.
It’s not certain that the publisher would like to publish every part of your article series, however he or she may want to publish one or two of your articles. If you’ve got 6 articles that are “tied” to each other within a series, you might well get publishers saying, “Well I really like parts 1 and 4, but I’m just not interested the rest. Creating a series can really help you build up momentum as a writer. It can also help you write content that more thoroughly covers your niche and generates ideas more easily.
The only thing to be sure of is that each article stands on its own and does not reference the other articles. That way you’re happy because you’ve got your article series going (in secret–no one else knows about it!), and publishers and readers are happy because they are presented with articles that look complete in themselves.
